Project Based Learning

By Kathy Schrock
Marilyn Lombardi, in her article, “Authentic learning for the 21st century” (http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/ELI3009.pdf), provides a good overview of the aspects that need to be present in online collaboration projects. These projects need to:
  • Focus on real-world, complex problems
  • Focus on attaining a solution
  • Include activities such as
    • Role-playing
    • Problem-based activities
    • Participation in virtual communities of practice
Michael Grant, in “Getting a grip on project-based learning” (http://www.ncsu.edu/meridian/win2002/514/project-based.pdf) offers a list that includes more specifics. He states that project-based learning projects should have the following components:
  • Introduction
  • Working in groups
  • Task/guiding question
  • Investigation à artifact
  • Resources
  • Scaffolding
  • Collaboration
  • Reflection / transfer
